Annoyed with the average camera performance of your smartphone? Well, I've got something for you. First things first, make sure to clean the glass covering your camera lenses coz' you never really gonna get great photos if taken through a scratched glass. The second thing which you need to make sure is that you need to be on Android Oreo and above. Nougat may also serve the purpose in some of the devices with Qualcomm SoC but I shall still suggest you to upgrade your device to oreo to carve out tye best results. If your smartphone brand doesn't support you by providing OS updates then you may always save the grace by installing Custom ROMs on your device. I shall be doing a detailed article on installing custom ROMs for various devices and I shall be attaching the link in the last part of this piece. You may also need to root your device to enable the camera2api on your device. You might be wondering what on earth is that term indicating and to know more, let's read further.
Are you aware of the amazing camera performance of Google Pixel devices even if they are stuck on a single camera lens on the back. What if I tell you that the single lens is capble of producing better portrait shots than the mighty iPhones in most of the scearios. What if I tell you Google's epic camera performance is mostly a software thing. Well yeah, Google definitely uses flagship grade camera hardware in their devices but what puts them apart is the exceptionally unique and advanced software algorithms used in their photo-processing after the shot is clicked. On top of that, the Google-photos app absxolutely adds magic to those shot with the editing array it provides in such a simple UI. I would say, even an complete novoice in the photography arena, would produce amazingly edited shots from the same. The camera app which is used in the pixel devices is known as GCam alias, Google-Camera. It's actuyally possibe to port that on many of the present day smartphones. Now, for doing that and reaching it's full potential you need camera2api enabled in the root level of your smartphone and you need to be on Android 8.0+. But wait, even if your device doesn't support either of the conditions, you may still be able to run GCam on your device. So, it's all a matter of trial and error.
First for every device, you need to do some research on what developers say about GCam support on your device. Head to XDA-forums and search your device. It is quite sure that you will find the required results there. Now, if you are too reluctant for it, I have got your back. First head to the play store and install the .... app and check if camera2api is supported at the hardware level. If not, you need to enable it manually by rooting your device which is a complicated process on its own. I shall also do a detailed stuff on rooting of devices but that's not presently under the scope of this article. Let me tell you a layman's method of doing the said. Just google gcam alongwith the name of your device. You will find a plethora of articles on how to do that if your device is a popular one. Now, if that doesn't work, do some research on how to root your device and then enable camera2api on your device. By doing that you are almost ready to support GCam all the way. After that, all you need to do is find a GCam port which is compatible with the brand of your smartphone and install it and that's it. You are quite ready to step into the world of mobile photography.
Like anything else on the planet, nothing comes without cons. Don't get me wrong, official GCam on pixel devices ius almost close to perfect. But what are doing is porting it unofficially on our devices through various tweaks and customiztions by the experts and developers. The biggest con which I feel is the time which is required to process the RAW images clicked by GCam by the processor. Of-Course, it depends on the SoC used on your smartphone but even with the Bleeding Edge SDM 845 SoC the processing speed is not quite what we call as fast. Apart from that, there's absolutely no gurantee that all the features of GCam will run on your device. But, I still feel GCam is wort5h giving a try and if it works, it's pure magic. Just one word, HATS OFF TO GOOGLE.
