Buying a 5G smartphone in early 2021, MY thoughts💥💥

Well, we are at a time when the uncertainty of the timeline of arrival of 5G is at it's peak. Recently, as of writing this article, Airtel demonstrated 5G using their existing 4G bands in very selected places like Hyderabad which brings us a clarity, that the technology is finally ready for deployment. But is that it? What are the steps involved? Also, should 5G be a major point of consideration while buying a new smartphone? Let's find out.

Interestingly, if you are about to buy a flagship device then I don't think this article is for you. And by flagship I don't mean Oneplus ( pun-intended). Why not Oneplus? Well you are going to find out. Now, most snapdragon flagships are mostly going to be 5G anyways so flagships buyers can sit back and relax. But, what does a mid-range buyer do in this situation of dilemma. There are a number of factors to be considered.

Firstly, if the device which is in the topmost priority of your shortlist has 5G, it's like an icing on the cake. Just go for it, there's no point pondering over that decision. But, if you are confused between a great 4G device and a not-so-great 5G device,  what should you do? Find out next.

Now I come to my second situation where there is 5G just for the sake of marketing like in the case of Oneplus Devices. Let me explain. A device, to catch a 5G network in a specific country, has to support the 5G bands that are available in the country. Now, in the case of Oneplus 8, which has the support of just the N78 5G band, there are very very high chances that the device will not support 5G when it is finally available for public use in India. This is where you need to be very careful not to choose a not-so-great 5G smartphone over a great 4G device when there is 5G just for the namesake, i.e, there are just one or two bands of 5G. Let me explain with another example. Suppose your are confused between the Mi 10i which has just one 5G band and the Samsung Galaxy F62 which is a 4G device instead, IMO you should be getting a F62 instead. There's no point looking at 5G on the Mi 10i because it is not anyway gonna support 5G in reality of  India.

Now comes the point where you are confused between a true 5G device and a 4G device, say for example the Galaxy F62 and Moto G 5G. Here, if you are planning to use a device for two years or more which most users do and camera isn't your highest priority, I would any-day recommend the Moto G 5G. One important factor behind me saying this is future-proofing, of course, the other important factor that I would like highlight is resale value. 2 years down the lane, selling a used 4G device would be a mammoth task and  don't think you would be willing to waste your invested money by just casting the device away or by giving it to someone for free. That said, if your are thus getting a true 5G device at an affordable price, just go for it in my opinion.

So the bottom-line here is that if you are getting a good and true 5G phone at an affordable price, I would say don't miss the deal. You would never regret future-proofing your phone and even if you do under a very unlikely scenario, you can't get a very good selling price for your 5G smartphone compared to a 4G device. But the most important factor here is to  be very very careful on how you choose the right smartphone. Examine your needs properly, get a good look at the specification in detail, watch unbiased reviews and make an informed decision. Also, is buying a 4G smartphone nor worth now? It is definitely worth it, if you are getting a very good deal like the Redmi note 10 pro max launched recently. Again I would like the same thing, be very careful and make an informed decision. Hope this clears your confusion a bit. If you are liking the content , don forget to come back and also a sub to the blog would be incredible!! Cheers!!!
